advantages being only considered, to those granted generally to the Managers and Superintendents of Banking and other Joint Stock Companies here, and his position in a pecuniary point of view is far better than that of every Government Officer in the permanent Civil Service of the Colony, with the exception of the Chief Justice.
I think therefore that no prospect should be held out to the Mint officers of their Salaries being increased, as they are fixed at what the Government can in fairness give without entailing revision of the whole Civil List.
I am told by persons here well informed on such subjects, that if very liberal terms offered by the Colonial Government for the Mint Officials were published in the "Times", there would be no lack of suitable candidates for any of the appointments.
